Annette Funicello's dancing partner was discovered in Fullerton California by Walt Disney when she was just thirteen years old. Funicello was not asked to take part in the auditions when she was a member of The Mickey Mouse Club cast in the very first season of the show which was at her Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' disappointment. Disney's instincts were spot on, and Funicello was soon the most popular Mickey Mouse Club performer. The story she wrote for her own show Adventures in Dairyland also featured her. Funicello's potential to become a teenage star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata who was a seasoned arranger to assist her in launching her music career. Annette, however, wasn't too enthusiastic about Funicello singing. Funicello was comfortable recordings, and enjoyed the experience of working with Camerata. He was among a handful of forty-year-old arrangers that understood the basics of the early rock era. Annette Sings Anka - her third album - was probably the first album to utilize the songs of a rock musician as a collection of music. Funicello was the star of Beach Party, one of the five beach party movies that were immensely successful. Usually co-starring Frankie Avalon, these films were produced by AIP but the scripts for every film were personally approved and read by Walt Disney to maintain Annette's clean image.
