O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She made it to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she experienced significant defeats in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so always top-quality that he never fell into the bottom 3. She was the judge. Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
